The cannabis industry is at a crucial juncture, where the need for safety standards and regulations is becoming increasingly apparent. In a recent interview, David Vaillencourt, Vice Chair of ASM International’s committee D37 on cannabis, shed light on the importance of establishing minimum standards to ensure consumer safety and industry growth.
Vaillencourt, who also runs the GMP Collective consulting firm and founded the S3 Collective nonprofit, emphasized that unlike traditional retail products, cannabis lacks the same level of oversight and quality control. This gap in regulation is particularly concerning in the unregulated hemp marketplace, where product safety is often uncertain.
The ASM International, an organization with roots dating back to 1898, has been instrumental in developing consensus standards across various industries. Their involvement in the cannabis sector began in 2017 with the formation of committee D37. This committee brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including regulators, industry professionals, and scientists, to develop minimum consensus standards for cannabis products.
Vaillencourt stressed the importance of balancing regulations with accessibility, ensuring that small operators and craft producers can still participate in the market. He highlighted the need for evidence-based standards that consider perspectives from all sides, including law enforcement, public health officials, and industry operators.
The S3 Collective, founded by Vaillencourt, aims to bridge the gap between science, standards, and safety in the cannabis industry. By facilitating collaboration between experts from various fields, the organization hopes to develop actionable standards that can prevent public health crises and overly burdensome regulations.
Throughout the interview, Vaillencourt touched on the challenges of interpreting and implementing standards and regulations. He emphasized the importance of translating these requirements into operational practices that businesses can effectively implement.
The conversation also delved into broader philosophical discussions about the balance between regulation and innovation, with Vaillencourt acknowledging the need to protect consumer safety while not stifling creativity and entrepreneurship in the industry.
As the cannabis industry continues to evolve, organizations like ASM International, GMP Collective, and S3 Collective play crucial roles in shaping its future. By fostering collaboration, developing consensus standards, and promoting safety, these initiatives aim to create a more trustworthy and sustainable cannabis market for consumers and businesses alike.
